OpenCore Legacy Patcher Guide

Beating obsolescence one old mac at a time!

How to do it yourself

This isn't a five-minute job, but it's absolutely doable if you're comfortable following instructions carefully. Set aside 2–3 hours, have a stable internet connection, and don't rush it.

Back up everything first

This is non-negotiable. Use Time Machine to an external drive, or back up to iCloud. The OCLP process is generally safe, but you are modifying system-level firmware. If something goes wrong and you have no backup, you could lose data. Don't skip this.

Build a bootable USB installer

You'll need a USB drive of at least 16GB. Inside the OCLP app, click Create macOS Installer. It will download the full macOS Sonoma installer (~13GB) and write it to your USB. This takes 20–40 minutes depending on your internet speed.

OCLP will also build the OpenCore boot files and write them to the USB — all in one step.

Run Post-Install Root Patches

This is the step most guides gloss over, but it's critical. After macOS installs and you've set up your account, open the OCLP app again. Click Post-Install Root Patch. This applies hardware-specific patches that restore things like Wi-Fi, graphics acceleration, and Bluetooth on older Macs.

Without this step, your Mac will run Sonoma but may feel sluggish, have no Wi-Fi, or have display issues. The app will tell you exactly which patches apply to your model.

Check your Mac's model identifier

Click the Apple menu → About This Mac. Note your model name and year. Then cross-reference with the OCLP compatibility list to confirm your Mac is supported for macOS Sonoma (14) or Sequoia (15).

Boot from the USB and install macOS

Restart your Mac and hold Option (⌥) immediately. Select your USB drive from the boot picker. Choose Install macOS Sonoma. The installation takes 30–60 minutes and will reboot several times — this is normal. Leave it alone.

Keep OCLP updated

Whenever Apple releases a macOS update (e.g. 14.1 → 14.2), always update OCLP before applying the macOS update. macOS updates can wipe root patches, so you'll need to re-run Post-Install Patches after each one. The OCLP app will remind you.

Check back at the OCLP GitHub page — new versions regularly expand support and fix issues.

BE AWARE

Honest risks to know about

We want you to go in with eyes open. OCLP is mature and widely used — but it's still a workaround, and there are trade-offs.

You must re-patch after every macOS update. Root patches get wiped when Apple pushes a system update. You need to run the OCLP app again after each one. It takes 5 minutes once you know the drill, but it's easy to forget.

Metal graphics may be partially accelerated. On some older GPUs (pre-2012 Mac Pros, for example), graphics performance is emulated rather than hardware-accelerated. For everyday use — Word, email, Safari, video calls — you won't notice. For gaming or video editing, you might.

System Integrity Protection (SIP) is disabled. Root patches require SIP to be off. This is a security trade-off — it means certain system protections are relaxed. That said, running an unpatched OS 12 on an unsupported Mac is arguably a bigger risk. We think the trade-off is worth it for most users.

Wi-Fi may require an extra step on some models. Macs with Broadcom Wi-Fi chips (common in 2013–2017 models) need an additional kext patch for full Wi-Fi support. OCLP handles this automatically for most models, but check your model's known issues page first.
